Alice has been living with debilitating chronic pain, she doesn't know the cause, and she can't seem to find a doctor who will take her seriously. A story about one woman's struggle to be heard as she grapples with gender bias in healthcare, and the deep frustration that comes from seeking help within a system predisposed to treat her pain as though it's all in her head. What happens when we are forced to hold back our rage in an effort to be believed?
This film is incredibly personal to our creative team, as it was born out of our own struggles with our health and the medical system. As we have continued to fight for adequate care for ourselves, we have been incredibly moved, and angered, by the number of people who have stories just like ours.
It has been cathartic and healing to channel these feelings into art, and to document these experiences through Alice’s story. Through the lens of comedy, we hope to highlight the absurdity of these situations, and find some relatable humour in the pain.
Our goal with this film is for women, those assigned female at birth, and all people with invisible pain to know that they are not alone, and to know that they deserve to be heard and believed.
Featuring a female-led creative team, a cast of Canadian talent, and original song “Here We Are Again” by JUNO-award nominated singer/songwriter Tara Kannangara, we present Alice Is Fine.
The film is now complete and beginning its festival run.
